IAS Topper aditya Ranjan Share his IAS Prelims Exam Strategy

IAS Topper Aditya Ranjan Shares his IAS Prelims Exam Strategy

Aditya Ranjan, a computer engineer, who worked in MNC earlier, belongs to a middle class family and has secured 99th rank in IAS 2014. His interest is social services which is main motivation behind clearing the exam. He shares his experience with jagranjosh.com.

UPSCPapers99.blogspot.in: What do you think about the changes in the IAS Prelims Exam Pattern? Does it make the selection process better? Please give your opinion.
Aditya Ranjan: The change is really good. In a democratic country like India the aspiration of the people should be made and I believe in a multi cultural, multi- linguistic nation, compulsion of English and any other language will not be good for all of us. So, I think pattern change is really good. Although a basic level of aptitude is required bus that can always be tested by making it qualifying.
UPSCPapers99.blogspot.in: Does joining coaching helps in clearing the IAS Prelims Exam? How far the group discussions are helpful in clearing IAS Prelims?
Aditya Ranjan:
Coaching can be helpful for few but I believe self study is self sufficient for clearing Prelims Examination because of both conventional nature of it and the fixed pattern that to be followed in the nature of questions or the pattern of the questions. Group discussion can be helpful in all the three stages of the examination but what I find among the students is it starts with studies but goes on to other places.
So, I believe group discussion can only be helpful if you are really- really focused and each and every member of your group is really focused. Otherwise, I think for Prelims you should focus on your own method of preparation that can be only studying by sitting in room secluded in nature.
UPSCPapers99.blogspot.in: When did you start the Preparation for IAS Prelims Exam?
Aditya Ranjan: I took Prelims for the first time in 2012 but I did it with my job, so, I frankly speaking, I started one month before Prelims but because of CSAT which was there earlier, I could clear it in the first attempt itself.
UPSCPapers99.blogspot.in: What was your strategy for General Studies for the IAS Prelims Exam?
Aditya Ranjan: My strategy was like there are two sections in Paper I- one I believe is the section which fixed in nature, static in nature and the other section which is I won’t say dynamic but very unpredictable in nature. So my strategy was to like I should perform really-really well in these static sections like Modern History, Polity, Geography and Economy and these sections Ecology and environment , Science and Tech and Art and Culture, these three sections are really unpredictable in nature.
So the first four sections there always are 40-45 questions from these four sections. One should always ensure that one should not get even a single incorrect in these sections and other three sections one should prepare well but it is very tough to prepare it in a 100% manner. So, my strategy was like- prepare first static ones then go for the dynamic ones.
UPSCPapers99.blogspot.in: What was your strategy to Prepare for the GS Paper II (CSAT)?
Aditya Ranjan: For CSAT I would say I already had that aptitude that I have an engineering background. So, my strategy was like again there are two sections- one is DI and Maths and other is English. The answers of DI and Maths will never be doubtful like if answer of a question in maths is ‘x’ it always be ‘x’. But in English Comprehensions, there are times- one feels like – could be ‘A’ or could be ‘B’, so, in those situations, I believe, my strategy was very perfect because what I did is I used to perform really well in DI and Maths so, that there is no single incorrect. One or Two is fine. But I used to do like that Maths, DI I should be very perfect and then to the English part because 3-4 questions will definitely be wrong in my each best. So, I had that in my mind.
UPSCPapers99.blogspot.in: How did you make balance between the General Studies and Aptitude Paper of IAS Prelims?
Aditya Ranjan: I have an engineering background, so, I did not put much effort on the CSAT things only solved the10-12 test papers just before the Prelims Examination. So, I put more effort on Paper I and this still works when the pattern has changed when there is only qualification is required 33%. My strategy will work for all the candidates from now onwards.
UPSCPapers99.blogspot.in: How far English is necessary in fulfilling the work responsibility of a Civil Servant?
Aditya Ranjan: I would say English has become an international language of trade and international language of diplomacy. So, I believe it is very much required in given the dynamic nature of the administration. There are lot of changes been done in District administration as well, so, it required in all the services but making it compulsory at the level of entrance cannot be justified.
I believe, if we can train a person for 10 months for so many responsibilities, I can assure anybody that those people who are being Civil Services selected through such a meticulous way of examination, such a tedious examination, I believe they can always be trained through one month of extra training period or extra effort on the candidates to learn English.
UPSCPapers99.blogspot.in: What suggestions would you like to give for the future candidates for IAS Prelims?
Aditya Ranjan: I would say you should be focused in terms of the materials that these are the materials I will need a free. I will not go here and there; anybody says this is a new thing you should go for, no. First decide what you will be reading by doing a meticulous research on internet and through toppers, or trough other websites and then keep it fixed, don’t change it in between the preparation.
And for the fun part, use quizzing mechanism as Jagranjosh has launched or other platforms use such methods so that you do not get bored in the phase of preparation because that one of the toughest task parts of this examination.

UPSCPapers.blogspot.in:  All India Rank 1 in UPSC Civil Services Exam!!!  Dream of lakhs of aspirants! Hearty congratulations from  for this unmatchable achievement! :-) Let’s start from UPSCPapers.blogspot.in the beginning. How did you come across the idea of writing UPSC Civil Services Examination? Was it your childhood dream?
No such childhood dream. Only realized strongly I wanted to do this when I was working. This job attracted me because of the impact it can allow one to have on thousands of peoples’ lives.
UPSCPapers.blogspot.in: How did you feel when you came to know that you are the topper (AIR 1)? Can you share the moments of happiness with our readers?
I couldn’t believe. Thought there has to be some mistake in my interpretation of the result. Then I called 3-4 other IPS Probationers and they verified it.
UPSCPapers.blogspot.in: IIT, IIM, IPS and now IAS!!! Can you brief us your thoughts, views and ambitions when you climbed each position in the ladder of your life?
Interesting question, would write a blog on it soon.
c: Do you feel that the competition level of UPSC Civil Services Exam is on a rise? It seems that there is an increasing trend of candidates from IITs, IIMs and AIIMS attempting and clearing this exam. Is Civil Service the final destination /ambition of Indian youth, in this age of lucrative private sector jobs?
Competition level has always been high. Still if one has to do a comparative study, it is decreasing now. Earlier, it was the only job opportunity but now so many other avenues have opened up. People are going abroad, working in private sector. You should thank the opening up of economy for this. Otherwise all the bright people I have met in my career in other places would have instead appeared for this exam.
Also, people from IITs have always been appearing and topping this exam. This trend has actually decreased if anything from 80s and 90s.

Inspirational Journey So Far + Background:

Dr.Roman Saini IAS
Hearty congratulations from UPSC Papers99.blogspot.in for this exceptional achievement! We are happy that your efforts are rewarded in grand style! How did you come across the idea of writing UPSC Civil Services Examination? Was it your childhood dream?
Not my childhood dream, thought of writing UPSC while I was doing MBBS. At that time I realized that the basic maladies cannot be solved by being a doctor. To solve the root cause of the problems in society ie. lack of awareness, medication, opportunities etc. by touching millions of lives at one go is possible only by becoming IAS.
UPSC Papers99.blogspot.in: How did you feel when you came to know that your name is in the toppers list? Can you share the moments of happiness with our readers?
I was sleeping, so I got to know from my friends the next day ie. 13th june 1 am morning. My phone was also switched off. Yes, I felt good that I cleared this examination. But this is not something to be very proud of, because the real work has just started.
UPSC Papers99.blogspot.in : Do you feel that the competition level of UPSC Civil Services Exam is on a rise? It seems that there is an increasing trend of candidates from IITs, IIMs and AIIMS attempting and clearing this exam. Is Civil Service the final destination/ambition of Indian youth, in this age of lucrative private sector jobs?
Competition is definitely on the rise because most of the candidates who are becoming IAS are from professional backgrounds. Large majority are engineers, MBA graduates or doctors. Civil service seems an attractive destination for youth. Middle class, in particular aspire to become civil servants. Private sector has its own importance but the diversity, challenges, vibrancy that you feel – each and every moment you feel alive – is in civil services only.

Study Plan in General

UPSC Papers99.blogspot.in: How did you approach this exam? What was your attitude and strategy in general (Prelims, Mains and Interview)?
Positive, optimistic, single minded, ruthless focus. Strategy is to read as much as you can from the same source and revise it again and again.
UPSC Papers99.blogspot.in: How long (Years/Months) have you been preparing, before you gave this attempt? Also, on an average how many hours did you put on a daily basis? How did you manage time?
Prepared for 2 years (more than sufficient). I was 21 when I gave Prelims. On an average I put around 6-10 hours on daily basis. And gradually increased the effort during exam time to 12 hours. Managing time was extremely difficult as I was pursuing MBBS from AIIMS. But if you have single-minded focused on it, you will find a way.
UPSC Papers99.blogspot.in: Were you a person who studied alone? Or a person who favored the combined-study approach?
Preferred studying alone rather than combine study approach. Not in favor of group study, because of the different knowledge base that we have. That creates problems.
UPSC Papers99.blogspot.in: What were the Newspapers and Magazines you followed? How many hours did you devote for newspapers? Any tips on newspaper-reading?
Newpaper- The Hindu (90 minutes) daily and magazine- Yojana.
: Did you attend any coaching institute? If yes, can you provide the details for each stage (Prelims/Mains/Interview)? How helpful were the coaching institutes?
Vajiram. Coaching institutes do help. They are not absolutely necessary, but they just do help.
UPSC Papers99.blogspot.in: What websites will you recommend for future aspirants for UPSC preparation, including the government websites?
Hindu.com, , jagranjosh, mrunal.org, ccrt (for art and culture), finance ministry, upsc.gov.in and gktoday. You can also check my YouTube channel , which has lots of awesome videos for UPSC preparation.
UPSC Papers99.blogspot.in: Did you use Social Media like Face book, Twitter or other forums for UPSC Preparation? Or did you say good-bye to the social media during preparation days? Any tips?
I used Facebook a lot and joined lot of groups. Lots of materials are available online. I think you should use FB a lot. But not for other purposes.
UPSC Papers99.blogspot.in: What was your preference: Reading online (Laptop/Tablet/Mobile) or reading the traditional way (Books)? Or a mix of both?
80% preparation was done online – very easy to make notes in OneNote/EverNote. Used laptop, tablets and all things of that sort which helped me. You cannot depend fully on traditional reading these days.
UPSC Papers99.blogspot.in : Can you elaborate your daily time table (When will you wake up, study sleep etc. etc.)
No daily time table as such. But used to study 6-8 hours a day. 7-8 hours sleeping.
