Job Profile and Promotion Policy of Sub Inspector in Central Bureau of Narcotics

The Sub Inspectors in Central Bureau of Narcotics are recruited through CGL Examination conducted by the SSC every year. The candidates after passing the examination need to undergo training to understand various laws associated with the department and work into the active fields to eradicate illegal operations in the field of narcotics and drugs. Like CBI, the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) is an agency dedicated to look after the cases related with drugs, narcotics and synthetic drug production in the country with illicit motive. It is the premiere investigation agency related to narcotics and drugs in India and involves greater amount of field work. The Sub Inspector post in CBN is a challenging one as they need to run around the clues that they gather to nab the criminals associated with the assorted crime. The SI generally works under the opium division which comprises of 4-5 working ranges. In the opium division the SI are kept in charge of a particular range. They need to report to their seniors about the activity and measure the area provided to them of any narcotics avidity.

The Sub Inspectors in the CBN are associated with manning their own range. They need to keep an eye on activity of the licensed fields of opium and make sure that there is no cultivation of opium poppy at any part of their area without a proper licence. The SI, at the time of weighment assists the District Opium Officer (DOO) and helps in the dispatch of opium consignment to various opium factories under government. There are many illicit and illegitimate activities associated in the field of narcotics, which the SI remains responsible for handling in their particular range. They need to look after the fact that there is no production of synthetic drug or narcotics manufacturing taking place under their nose. They have to undergo search the various facilities and manufacturing units along with making seizures with their seniors under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS), 1985. They also require performing many other tasks related to the filed as governed by the headquarters of the concerned department. The salary of the SI is in the pay scale of Rs. 9600- 34800 with Grade Pay of Rs. 4600/- , which is subject to increment as the time passes in the service.

The job of SI consists of brave actions from the candidates from time to time. The thrill and excitement associated with the job attracts the youth towards it. But the job also includes certain amount of risks and involves confrontation with people who are into the criminal filed for long. There are no fixed working hours in the department and the candidates need to perform at strict deadlines. They often have to work through simplest of the clues that they receive and bust the operation of narcotics and drug dealing gangs and mafias. The respect and thrill associated with the job attracts many candidates towards it, which is way more satisfying than the boring office work.

  • Promotion Policy in CBN :-

The candidates who join as SI in Central Bureau of Narcotics get ample amount of scopes to rise up in the level during their working years in the department. Those who join a Sub Inspectors in the department could rise up to the level of Inspectors in less than 5 years’ time. Based on performances and internal examination the candidates can rise up to the level of Superintendent within a time span of 10-12 years. The candidates, towards the end of their career can even work as Assistant Narcotics Commissioner or end up heading the department, through hardwork and good record.
